In the summer of 2016, I was commissioned to help write a piece of theme music for United Nations Africa Regional Platform and 5th High Level Meeting on Disaster Risk Reduction. They keep the titles concise for wide appeal. The week-long convention, hosted by Mauritius, was a continent-wide plan to implement risk reduction communications and procedures, known as the Sendai Framework.
The commission came to me through New Zealand based, Healthsongs International – who write songs aimed at engaging societies at a grass-roots level, to spread instructional messages in times of disaster and to raise awareness of health issues.
I took on board a producer and musicians I’d worked with previously at Alpha Ents, Ndola, Zambia – to record vocals and develop the music with Africa-wide appeal.
The piece was played as a theme to accompany events during the week and then used to create derivative packs, including a ringtone and an educational package.
The recording will be uploaded as it becomes available.
